6 Outdoor New Year Celebrations for Families in the Twin Cities

There are endless options for ringing in the New Year here in the Twin Cities. You’ll find big parties just for the adults, kid events with confetti, and fun galore. But sometimes these events can feel overwhelming for families who have already been cooped up with holiday events. Why not take the party outside this year?

The Twin Cities has many nature centers and parks and hosting amazing New Year celebrations, with ice skating, hiking, sledding, s’mores, and so much more. Your family is sure to find a fun and unique way to welcome in the New Year in the great outdoors.


New Year’s Eve Sunset Snowshoe | 13351 Elm Creek Road Osseo, MN

Hours: 3 PM – 4:30 PM

Cost: $6

Usher in the New Year with a sunset snowshoe through the woods! Just as the sun goes down, a guide will lead you and your family through Eastman Nature Center trails. Snowshoes are available to use, too! Reservations are required by 24 hours prior.


New Year’s Eve Family Skate Party | Windom Northeast Park, 2251 NE Hayes St, Minneapolis, MN 55418

Hours: December 30, 4 PM-7 PM

Cost: FREE

New Years’ Eve Party!! Come join Upper Northeast Parks, your neighbors and friends as we celebrate the last night of the year. Popcorn, Lemonade & Fire Pit with Smores Station. Music, Loaner skates, and sleds will be available.


Noon Year’s Confetti Dance Party at Como Zoo | 1225 Estabrook Drive, Saint Paul

Hours: 10 a.m. December 31 & 10 a.m. January 1

Cost: Free

Take your family dance party out of the kitchen and into the zoo with a live DJ to kick off the celebration. Other activities include crafts, animal enrichment, and prizes. All of this leads up to the big count down to noon to watch hundreds of beach balls drop from the ceiling!


New Year’s Eve Party – Lebanon Hills Regional Park | 860 Cliff Rd., Eagan

Hours: 5-8 p.m.

Cost: $10/person, ages five and younger are FREE

What better way to ring in the New Year than with winter play? Celebrate the New Year along with the wild animals with candlelight hiking, snowshoeing, ice skating, and sledding. Then warm up as the party continues in the Visitor Center with a DJ dance party, storytelling, and magic show, all before the ball drop. 


Candlelight and Ice at Woodlake Nature Center  | 6710 Lake Shore Dr., Richfield

Hours: 6 PM -9 PM

Cost: $5/person, free for Friends of Wood Lake Members.

Bundle up and explore the trail of hundreds of candle-lit luminaries through the trees in search of critters such as deer, foxes, and owls. Afterward, warm up inside with a fire, hot cocoa, roasted marshmallows, and games. 


Last S’mores of the Year | Lowry Nature Center, 7025 Nature Center Dr, Victoria

Hours: 12 PM – 4 PM

Cost: FREE

Come ready to practice campfire building and make s’mores on the last day of the year. Then head out for a magical walk to explore and play in the winter woods.


Winter Lights New Year’s Eve Party – Minnesota Landscape Arboretum | 3675 Arboretum Dr, Chaska, MN 55318

Hours: 5-10:30 PM

Cost: $15 for Arboretum members, $30 for non-members and $5 for children ages 15 and younger

Celebrate the end of 2022 with a magical walk through the Arboretum’s Winter Lights display. You will also find family-friendly games, snacks, photo opportunities, crafts, live music from Traveled Ground, and more at this New Year’s celebration. Enjoy countdown celebrations on the hour at 8, 9 and, at 10 p.m., including a sparkling apple cider toast!
