How to Build Positive Parent-Teacher Relationships

This post is written in partnership with New Horizon Academy

It truly takes a village to raise a child, and having a strong relationship between parents and teachers can make all the difference in a child’s academic journey. When parents and teachers effectively communicate and collaborate, it creates a solid foundation for supporting a child’s growth and development.

At New Horizon Academy, our communication app allows teachers and parents to message back and forth, sharing photos and updates throughout the day. In addition, we hold regular conferences to discuss a child’s progress, needs, and achievements. We know that regular communication is essential to a positive parent-teacher relationship, which is why we make it a priority! Schedule a tour at your neighborhood New Horizon Academy to learn more.

Six Tips for Positive Parent-Teacher Relationships

Here are six tips for building strong and healthy relationships between you and your child’s teacher:

  • Get to Know Each Other: Healthy communication starts with a simple conversation. Take a couple of minutes at drop-off and pick-up time to chat with your child’s teacher. Share your child’s wins, struggles, and other details to help the teacher better understand your child’s interests, dislikes, and milestones. This could be as simple as telling them: “Kierra loves to read at home” or “Thomas tried potty training for the first time this weekend”. The more details the teacher knows, the better support they can offer.
  • Ask Questions: As you chat with your child’s teacher, be sure to ask questions. Ask about your child’s day – what are they learning? What activities are they enjoying? What activities do they find challenging? The more you can know about your child’s day at school, the more effectively you can seamlessly integrate that same learning at home.
  • Form a Partnership: See your child’s teacher as a partner – someone who is dedicated to helping your child learn and grow. Teachers are committed to your child’s success, so assume good intent and don’t be afraid to welcome teacher feedback.
  • Participate in Classroom Events: Participating in classroom events is an excellent way to build relationships at your child’s school.  Whenever you’re able, attend family fun nights, book fairs, open houses, and any other events the school offers for families. This is a great opportunity to connect with your child’s teachers and also with other parents and families.
  • Attend Parent-Teacher Conferences: Make sure to attend parent-teacher conferences throughout the year. Conferences help strengthen relationships between teachers and parents and are a great way to recognize, understand, and celebrate your child’s progress. When parents and teachers work together to build a strong support system, children will naturally thrive in school and at home, and will receive the very best education possible!
  • Stay in the Know: Be sure to stay up to date on important things happening at your child’s school. Read school newsletters, morning messages, director emails, or any other important communications your child’s school sends out. This ensures you don’t miss any important updates or events.
