Spring Cleaning = Time to Freshen Up Your Wardrobe

Smell of Spring is in the air and before we know it, Summer will arrive and schedules will change as our kids are done with school for a few months with new activities starting or activities ending.

With that also comes the thought of putting away my winter clothes in storage and breaking out the lighter options I have for Spring and Summer.  For me, Spring came early since my family and I enjoyed California weather for a week during Spring Break.  However, as my Facebook feed shows, parts of Minnesota were not ready yet to allow us to break out our Spring wardrobes for at least a little while longer. Even still, the weather is changing for the better as we know it and we might as well start that Spring wardrobe sooner than later!  I was starting to look through my Spring options and realized that a lot of it was too big or I had a lot of what was I thinking???? moments. In a bit of a panic as we were leaving for California the next week, however, I was able to scrounge up some decent options in my current wardrobe, but it prompted me to ask myself what are the newest trends for the season (I do like to follow these from time to time) and I am a mom of three, so I want it to be easy to maintain but still fashionable. I had no clue where to start until I remembered I had a coffee date with my fashionista friend.

I thought meeting up with her would be a perfect opportunity to get some of her insight of what the new trends are for Spring/Summer and what would be good for a mom on the go.

I’ve also realized as I get older that I need to find items that will stay in style for more than a year and I am also okay with a higher price point because of that. Gone are the days of shopping at Forever 21 and stores of the like (many of these items fit in the what-was-I-thinking category for sure).

I let her finish her Pho for the most part before I jumped in with all my questions (or so I think) and the tidbits she gave me were amazing! I hope some of these will fit your fancy too, and feel free to check the ones I have found or find your own version at your favorite shopping spot.  Some of the spots I like to frequent on my fashion quests are TJMaxx, Marshalls, Nordstrom, Nordstrom Rack, PARC Boutique, Target and LEN. They have many of the items listed here with a variety of brands and styles. Prices will vary, but overall, you’ll be able to find a good deal if you are looking for one.

Go-to piece for the season for the on-the-go mom

For this season, I would recommend a great pair of leather sandals. These Dolce Vita Payce Sandals I found at PARC Boutique are comfortable and versatile leather slides with a slight wedge that can easily be slipped on and off (as you are chasing kids in and out of the house). What to wear them with? Pair them with a tee and jeans or a summer maxi dress.

Spring trend to try

A trend I am loving right now are culottes.  They are so comfortable and easy to wear. Another plus for me is that being of shorter stature, culottes are great since you don’t have to worry about hemming, they are ready to wear.  Love the navy blue Wayf culottes I found at Nordstrom.

What to wear around your messy kids

You can’t go wrong with a loose/boyfriend style t-shirt made of 100% cotton. These “Whisper” cotton pocket tees from Madewell I found at Nordstrom comes in a variety of colors.

Splurge on a well-made t-shirt because it’s all about cost per wear, which is so true since most of my tees go in the wash after one wear due to some kind of stain from one of the boys (okay, okay, sometimes it’s a stain of my own making), the lower cost items I have gotten lasted maybe a month before they became too faded, had holes due to too many washes, or just shrunk.

Don’t forget the accessories

Can’t go wrong with lightweight or oversized scarves since you never know what you will get with Minnesota weather this time of year. They are also perfect for night time in the summer when it gets cooler if you are up North at the cabin or as a traveling mom, a scarf is a must for me no matter where I go. I found this one at LEN.

Also, as a mom of three, a fashionable yet multi-functional bag is key. I’m in love with the Baggu Canvas backpack I found at PARC Boutique because it is lightweight, washable, roomy, and most importantly, frees your hands.

Going from work to dinner outfit

I do this a lot where I go straight to a dinner or some kind of event after work and don’t have time to change. I am always looking for items that are suitable for the work day, but will still look good while out at night whether it is a casual setting or a fancier dinner or event.  I am all for a shirt dress like the Midi shirt dress from Target’s Who What Wear series (different designers make awesome items exclusive for this line). Again, due to my shorter stature problems, the dress is not too long so I don’t have to worry about hemming and it’s comfortable as well and can transition from work in booties or flats and then switching it up with a pair of heels (I actually have a pair in the car for these occasions) for the night time.

Now that I am back in Minnesota and the weather is making a turn for the better, I am so excited to have started to freshen up my wardrobe and be on the lookout for me in these pieces because I am not one to hold back if I get an awesome piece of fashion I love to wear.  Happy shopping!
