Local Love: Melanated Mamas

Today we are sharing our LOCAL LOVE for Melanated Mamas and it’s Founder Monica Jones!

“Minneapolis, especially, has some of the worst racial inequalities in the nation. We have a lot of work to do to help bridge those gaps and I’m here to make an impact on those numbers.”

Tell us all about you! What you do and where your passions lie?

I am an introverted Virgo millennial sharing my life with my husband and three little girls. I got a special place in my heart for Brazilian Jazz, being an advocate for the maternal health of BIPOC mothers, and spicy margaritas.

Tell us all about Melanated Mamas!

I’m the founder of a maternal wellness company called Melanated Mamas. We are on a mission to enrich the lives of mothers through community and educational resources during their pregnancy and postpartum journeys so that their experience is supportive, empowering, and joyful. We understand that the journey into motherhood can be difficult for all. Still, it’s incredibly challenging for BIPOC moms due to racial disparities in our healthcare systems and the increasing risk of maternal mortality. We are here to create an inclusive space that centers and amplifies the voice and stories of those we are often unseen.

What do you love about the Twin Cities area? Why is it the perfect place for your business?

I think the Twin Cities is a great place to raise a family. We have great school systems and amazing opportunities for growth and advancement in many career paths. I think my business fits into the Twin Cities area. Minneapolis, especially, has some of the worst racial inequalities in the nation. We have a lot of work to do to help bridge those gaps and I’m here to make an impact on those numbers.

What is the best way for our TCMC community to support your business?

Engaging on our Instagram page right now is the best way to support us and join our email list for some new and exciting things coming this summer.

Now let’s talk about your role as a mother and friend. How do you prioritize friendships and connections with women?

I’m very intentional about my time and I swear by my calendar. Setting up calendar dates with my friends is a way to ensure that I’m blocking out time for those connections. I’m also always on IG so I’m connecting all day with my friends in the DMs.

Being a mom is no easy task in and of itself. How do you relax and take care of you?

I’m in a very busy season right now so I’m don’t have time for all the luxury self-care tasks but waking up before everyone else has been my jam lately. It allows me to pour into Monica before I put on my mom hat for the day.

What’s been your greatest joy in motherhood?

Watching my kids grow has been the greatest joy for me. Seeing their personalities come to life and watching them grow into these beautiful, amazing humans is such a blessing to see.

How do you hope your lives influence and/or inspire other women?

I hope to inspire women to go after their big audacious goals. We are so often told that once you become a mother your life stops. Yes, there are some growing pains but you still have so much life to live.
