Baby Bites: Cinnamon Pear Sauce

Baby Bites: Cinnamon Pear Sauce | Twin Cities Moms Blog

When my kiddos were babies I got such joy out of making homemade purees for them.  I loved knowing exactly what was going into it and playing with different varieties.  Store bought versions can be so bland and redundant; I used them, don’t get me wrong, but it was always nice to offer something homemade and delicious when I could.  I’ve always felt like the earlier I could introduce flavor and spice to my kids tastebuds the more likely they would accept trying new foods and experimenting with flavor.  So far, it has not proved me wrong, my kids are always willing to try something new.  They don’t always like what they try, but having open minded eaters is really what I’m striving for.

This Cinnamon Pear Sauce was a HUGE hit when they were babies…..and is still a recipe I go back to over and over.  They absolutely adore it, to this day.  And I’d be lying if I said my husband and I didn’t dig it, too.

It’s easy peasy pearsy to put together and it will leave your house smelling just plain devourable.  Simmering it on the stove gives off a beautiful, cozy, warming scent that runs throughout every inch of your home; total added bonus.

Roughly chop a few ingredients, throw it in a pot and let it go.  When it cools give it a minute in the blender and you’re left with nothing but a delicious, nourishing, top notch snack or dessert.  Num!

Cinnamon Pear Sauce

notes: you can use whatever apples you like in this recipe. I like to use a variety that is sweet but lends a little tartness, too. Granny Smith, McIntosh and Jazz all work great in this.

Ingredients

8 Ripe Pears, cored and diced

2 Apples, peeled, cored and diced *see note above

1/2 Cup Water

1/4 Cup Fresh Orange Juice

1 1/4 Teaspoons Ground Cinnamon

1/2 Teaspoon Ground Nutmeg

Directions

Place all ingredients in a large saucepan or soup pot. Bring to a gentle boil over medium high heat and stir well. Once at a boil, cover, reduce heat to medium and cook for 30 minutes. Remove the lid and continue to cook over medium heat for an additional 20 minutes. Cool slightly and puree in a blender or food processor until smooth. Store in the refrigerator for up to 7 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
