Certified Nurse Midwives: A New Approach to Women’s Health

When you first find out you are pregnant, you’ll probably be drawn to the never-ending cycle of Googling about all-things baby, pregnancy, motherhood and birth related. (And let’s be honest, that non-stop Googling likely hasn’t ceased if your little one is here.)

For most moms, many of those early searches revolve around figuring out: Where and how and who should deliver this baby?! And, if you plan on having another little one in the future, you might be pondering that question again.

Historically, ObGyns have been associated with hospital birth and midwives have been associated with homebirth.  Some women may feel: I really like the idea of the focused support and low-intervention approach of midwifery care but I want the safety of a hospital birth with physician back-up.

Today, you don’t have to choose as the perfect option is available: Certified Nurse Midwives backed by a team of Physicians. Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs) offer both a clinical and personalized approach to women’s health and prenatal care. Since the 1970s, CNMs have been providing high quality care for laboring women in hospital settings with the collaborative support of physicians.

What is a Certified Nurse Midwife?

A CNM holds a master’s degree in nursing and also is required to pass separate board exams to be both a registered nurse and a certified midwife. This advanced practice nursing specialty has expertise in women’s healthcare, including pregnancy, postpartum and a wide range of gynecologic issues.

A CNM takes up-to-date evidence and integrates it with each patient’s physical, emotional, and cultural needs.

What Happens When a CNM Delivers my Baby?

Our Certified Nurse Midwives work in collaboration with physicians during prenatal care, labor and childbirth. Midwives are skilled in low-intervention births, but also provide care for women who desire an epidural or other medical assistance.

During delivery, midwives remain present — but if concerns arise, a CNM will consult with a physician to make the best decision for both mom and baby’s health. If a cesarean section is needed, the physician will perform the surgery.

The personal approach combined with the safety and security of the hospital setting makes women feel as though they’ve gotten the best of both worlds in their birth experience.

Can I See a Certified Nurse Midwife Beyond Prenatal Care?

A CNM doesn’t just work with women during pregnancy and childbirth. Because they are experienced in women’s health, they see patients for annual exams, birth control counseling, teen health, perimenopause, and more.
