Keeping Warm This Winter With Zippo Hand Warmers

Keeping Warm This Winter With Zippo Hand Warmers | Twin Cities Moms Blog

My family loves the outdoors and during the winter we spend a lot of time doing activities such as ice fishing, snowmobiling, and sledding. What this mom doesn’t love is getting two kids all bundled up to go outside only to be outside for 10 minutes and hear a kid say “My hands are cold. I want to go inside!”

I recently had the opportunity to try out the Zippo Hand Warmers and couldn’t wait to try them. The Zippo Hand Warmer is a catalytic heater that comes in a 6-hour or 12-hour unit. The first thing I noticed was the super sleek design of the units which I Ioved. The sizes of the units are great as well and they are the perfect size to slip into a jacket pocket. It comes with a great fleece bag to put the Hand Warmer in.

To use the Hand Warmer, you first must decide how long you want to use it because once it is ignited, you cannot turn it off. TheHand Warmer comes with a filler cup with measuring lines for 6 hours and 12 hours that you use to fill the unit with Zippo Lighter Fluid. Once it is filled, you then need to keep the unit upright for two minutes for the fuel to be distributed. After mine was filled, I went to place it on the counter for the 2 minutes, but I found that the bottom of the 12 hour unit is not flat so therefore you would need to find something to lean it against. After the two minutes were up, I then lit the unit, put it in the warmer bag, and gave it to my daughter to put in her pocket as we headed out for a snowmobile ride.

While out on the trail, my daughter and I decided to stop and have a snack break. While eating, my daughter warmed up her hands with the zippo hand warmer and I was pleasantly surprised at how warm it was. Typically she wouldn’t have been able to have her hands out of her gloves very long, but the hand warmer worked great and really helped to keep her hands warm.

Later in the day we headed out onto the lake for some ice fishing and when I went into the ice house I found my daughter sitting with her rod in one hand and the hand warmer in the other. She kept telling me “Mom this thing is really nice and warm!”.

So here is my breakdown of the Zippo Hand Warmer:

Pros

  • Sleek design
  • Throws off a good amount of heat, but not too hot to the touch
  • Reusable
  • Great size for pockets
  • Nice fleece warmer bag to put the unit in.

Cons

  • I felt like it was a little bit of a hassle with all the parts you needed for this heater. You needed to carry the filler cup, lighter fluid, and a lighter in order to use it.
  • The instructions say that you must keep the unit upright for 2 minutes after you fill it, but the bottom of the 12 hour unit is rounded to the point that you cannot just sit it up by itself.
  • You cannot turn it off

Overall, I thought this was a nice little heater for someone to use that spends a lot of time in the outdoors, especially in the cold winters we have here in Minnesota!
