Valentine’s Day Cookie Bouquets

My love language has always been food. I love making food for others as a way to express my love and gratitude. I’ll jump at any reason to bake or cook for others. Naturally, I love holidays because they are the perfect excuse to make food, especially treats.

Years ago, I made heart shaped cookie bouquets for Valentine’s Day. They were adorable and I had so much fun making them. I don’t know how I forgot about them! I was recently reminded of the recipe and I thought it would be a fun project to make with my three-year old. These cookie bouquets look impressive but really they are simple. I like adding food color to the dough to make the cookies stand out. I used melted white chocolate to decorate. You can go the icing route but I like the simplicity of the drizzled chocolate. Don’t forget sprinkles and colored sugars, they really add a fun element!

Valentine’s Day Cookie Bouquets

Makes 10-12 large cookies

Ingredients

  • 3 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup butter, room temperature
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp almond extract
  • red or pink food color (optional)
  • heart cookie cutters
  • cookie sticks
  • white chocolate chips
  • sprinkles, colored sugar, etc

Directions

For the cookie dough: Mix flour and salt in a large bowl and set aside. Add butter and sugar to a mixing bowl. Cream together until light and creamy. Add egg and extracts. Mix until well combined. Slowly add a third of the flour mixture to the mixing bowl. Stir until combined and then add half of the remaining flour. Stir until combined before adding the remaining flour. Mix until the dough comes together and forms into a ball. Optional: Add a couple drops of food coloring to dough and mix until evenly colored. Take dough and form into a flat disc before covering with plastic wrap. Refrigerate dough for at least 2 hours.

For cutouts: Take disc of cookie dough out of the fridge and let soften for 20-30 minutes. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Roll dough onto floured surface until it is a half-inch thick. Use heart shaped cookie cutters to make cookies. Carefully transfer cut out cookie dough to sheet pan. Slide a cookie stick underneath each cookie until it goes three quarters of way up. Gently press down to help the dough adhere to the cookie stick. Bake for 12 minutes.

To decorate: Allow the cookies to cool completely. Melt white chocolate in microwave for 30 seconds. Stir and then microwave for an additional 30 seconds. Repeat until all the chocolate is melted. Use a spoon to drizzle white chocolate over the cookies. Decorate with sprinkles.

Once the chocolate has dried you can wrap your cookies in a cellophane bag and tie with a pretty ribbon or make a cookie bouquet. To make our cookie bouquet, we filled a mason jar with M&M’s and then placed the cookies inside. The end result is a pretty bouquet of cookies perfect for gifting to loved ones.
