Hunkering Down – Top TV Picks for Couples

Have you heard that saying about love grows best in little houses (I believe that there is a country song where this comes from by Doug Stone)?  I’ll share it with you as I need to repeat the words a few times to settle myself down after a weekend of family togetherness in our old, lovely home.

“Love grows best in little houses, with fewer walls to separate.  Where you eat and sleep so close together, you can’t help but communicate.  And if we had more room between us, think of all we’d miss.  Love grows best, in houses just like this.”

Yes, indeed.  If you were to show up to my house when the four of us are just hanging out, you would likely find us in a similar state as this.

We have no man cave, or cozy basement space, so we gather in the one room with the comfy couch and TV and all are stuck watching the same program.  The adults patiently watch the latest superhero cartoon, I follow football and my husband keeps up on Downton Abbey episodes.

Often times rather than argue over who’s turn it is to control the remote, my husband and I dive into a series together so the decision is mutual and made well in advance of our “chill time” – a phrase coined by Chris.  I would love to say that we read books to unplug or have long chats over the latest political decisions of the day, but in the dead of winter, we tend to cozy up on the couch and enjoy an hour or two of our favorite series that provide us with back-to-back viewing.

See – we do “true” quality couple time

So if you’re like me and struggling to keep yourself and your hubs entertained while you are hunkered down, consider our list of mutually agreed upon show series.  We hope you enjoy the cozy time and we would love to hear what you enjoy watching too – and yes, some of these might make you feel smarter, more stupid, or just might be a new guilty pleasure.

Top 6 – Alissa (because only 5 would be too standard):

  1. The Sopranos
  2. House of Cards
  3. Friday Night Lights – did I mention I watch football?!
  4. Damages
  5. Entourage
  6. Modern Family

Top 6 – Chris:

  1. House of Cards
  2. West Wing
  3. The Newsroom
  4. Homeland
  5. The Americans
  6. Lost

Alissa, My Boyfriend and I just finished the series, “Breaking Bad”. We loved it even though it was a little slow at first. We just started watching “House of Cards”, and after 4 episodes, are loving it! Thanks for the great post, and stay cozy ALL of you!

Love,
Mary

If you have Huluplus, my husband and I have been enjoying their exclusive shows or short run series.
1. End Game
2. Raines
3. The Wrong Guys

I agree with Bert to we love Sherlock

Thanks for those ideas Cassi. We don’t have Huluplus, but have considered trying it out. Sounds like some good choices for us!

Sarah – we should put 24 on the list. I know so many people that have loved Dexter. We did one episode, but never went back. We might need to reconsider that again.

Thanks for the list. My husband and I stuggle to find shows we both enjoy. We’re in the middle of Breaking Bad now and have the last season of Dexter to finish. I recommend putting Dexter back on your list!

I’ll work on talking Chris back into Dexter, Jessica. I think we are going to start with Sherlock Holmes. Have you seen The Sopranos or Damages? I think you would enjoy either of those. Thanks for the comment.
