As a Florida born Minnesota transplant, I’ve learned to truly appreciate the beautiful warm summers that bring life back into the Twin Cities after months of cold weather. Once summer comes around, Minnesotans plan to be outdoors whenever they get a chance. One of the best things to do while out and about is to checkout the outdoor patios of some of our favorite local Twin Cities restaurants.
This year, COVID-19 threw us for a loop, causing many restaurants to temporarily shut down and leaving most of us weary of dining out. Overall, it feels as though restaurants have done a great job to safely re-open their outdoor patios by offering limited seating to make patrons feel safe and socially distanced while there.
So with this in mind, whether you want to have a romantic date night or spend some time outdoors with your family, there is a restaurant with a great outdoor patio for you. These are some great restaurants with outdoor patios in and around the Twin Cities right now.
W.A. Frost and Company
Located on the historic Cathedral Hill, W.A. Frost and Company is a great option for a romantic date to get some time away from the kids. The patio is surrounded by beautiful greenery with different types of flowers and plants everywhere you turn. W.A. Frost’s has a great contemporary American menu with many things to try.
In order to follow their COVID guest policies, you’ll need make a reservation prior to going to the restaurant.
The Handsome Hog
If you’re a fan of southern style food, The Handsome Hog is the place for you. Chef Justin Sutherland is well known for making enjoyable plates, famously known for winning the Iron Chef America.
The Handsome Hog recently moved to a new location which provides a beautiful outdoor patio. I love that you can sit near the picturesque flowers that line the perimeter of the patio or sit towards the front and do a little people watching. Serving its infamous chicken and waffles as well as shrimp and grits, that are to die for, The Handsome Hog’s patio brings the south up to the Midwest.
Keg and Case
Keg and Case has a huge outdoor space that is perfect for a family outing. The popular food market has succeeded in bringing all of their common seating outdoors for a socially distanced dining experience. You can grab your food indoors and then eat at one of the tables on the expanded patio. Many vendors are making it even easier by offering pop-up tables and food trucks outdoors so you don’t even need to go inside.
Stop by Keg and Case on Fridays from 6 to 8 p.m. for their socially distanced live outdoor music series.
Psycho Suzi’s has always been a fan favorite and had to be added to the list. Known for providing a vacation-like experience, dining on their outdoor patio will make you feel like you’re on your own private island.
In order to soak in the waterfront views, you’ll need to make your reservation online. Psycho Suzi’s All Inclusive Food and Open Bar experience includes 90 minutes of seating with breathtaking views of the river, up to 4 drinks, and all you can eat food.
Seven Sushi and Steakhouse
The rooftop at Seven Sushi and Steakhouse provides amazing views of downtown Minneapolis and is a great place to lounge and relax. This is another great place to go for a romantic date night or a daytime brunch. Seven offers a great menu of Asian and American food.
Make sure you check out their Facebook page to find some of their ongoing events, like their Rooftop Theatre Nights on Tuesdays.
If you want to get out of the city for a little, 6Smith Restaurant in Wayzata offers beautiful views of lake Minnetonka on their patio. This steak and seafood restaurant has a ton of outdoor socially distanced seating.
The staff is very welcoming and it really does make you feel like you’re on a vacation. You can make reservations online and all they ask of you is to keep 6 feet distance from staff and other guests. You’ll also need to wear a mask upon entry and while moving around the restaurant.
The Smack Shack’s Minneapolis location offers an outdoor patio that is spaced out and is also a great place to go with your family. Indulge in casual costal seafood and make sure you try their Smack Shack original lobster roll.
Although you can walk right in, I recommend making a reservation online to make sure you aren’t waiting too long for a seat.
Sweeney’s Saloon definitely has one of the best patios in Saint Paul. There’s plenty of trees and plants to take in while enjoying the fun atmosphere. Sweeney’s provides delicious bar food including a ‘build your own burger’ option.
Although it isn’t required, Sweeney’s recommends that you make a reservation before going so you can reserve a spot for patio seating.
And there you have it. Even though this year looks different in so many ways, restaurants have adapted well to allow us to enjoy some of the best outdoor patios safely and with ease. So before the weather turns too brisk, be sure to check out some of these incredible options in and around the Twin Cities!
