Oh, How Times Have Changed: Pizza Burgers

Pizza Burgers | Twin Cities Moms Blog

When we were first married, my husband and I would wake up in the morning and he would always roll over and say, “I love you”, first thing.  Heart melting.  And do you know what I would typically say back?  “What sounds good for dinner?”  I know….he used to tease me about it constantly.  But hey, he knew damn well that I loved him back and I couldn’t wait to plan what kind of fun meal we would share together at dinner.  That was my way of telling him I loved him back.

Now, my husband and I wake up in the morning and he always rolls over and says, “your breath smells like hot garbage.”  I know, heart melting.  And do you know what I say back?  “I would give anything for five more minutes of sleep.”  Pure bliss, I tell you.

As much as I wish I had the time to plan and prepare our meals like I used to, it just isn’t feasible most days.  These days, I meal plan and do all of my shopping for the week on Sundays…so much for spontaneity, huh?  But I will tell you, the planning saves me so much stress and time, and I truly believe it saves our family money.  This recipe winds up on our meal plan often.  It is great for those days that you only have about 20 minutes to get dinner on the table…which is most days, right?  It’s crazy simple, requires just a few ingredients and is super tasty.  I’m curious to see who loves it more, you or your kiddos.  It’s a toss-up around our house.

Note:  To learn about my family’s favorite marinara sauce, see here

Ingredients

1 1/2 Pounds Ground Beef

2 Cups Marinara Sauce

1 1/2 Cups Shredded Gouda Cheese

4 Whole Grain Hamburger Buns, sliced in half

Directions

Preheat oven to 400 degrees and lay each half of the hamburger bun in a single layer on a baking sheet, cut side up.  Brown the ground beef over medium-high heat and drain the fat.  Pour the marinara sauce over the meat and bring to a simmer.  Cook, on medium-low heat for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.  Add 1 cup of the cheese and stir it until the cheese is melted.  Spoon the meat mixture onto the hamburger bun halves and sprinkle the tops with the remaining 1/2 cup cheese.  Bake for 10 minutes or until the buns slightly crisp up and the cheese is melted.  Serves 4-6
