On My Favorite (mostly natural) Beauty Products

Mostly natural beauty products

I have two little bitty children. I work from home, where the itty bitty children and perhaps the UPS man are the only ones who see me. I also have deep dark circles under my eyes and want to look somewhat not deathly exhausted if we need to go to the store, etc. Finally, as our family tries to move to a cleaner life – buying organic produce (at least the dirty dozen), organic meats and dairy, and even baby wipes and diapers – why shouldn’t we treat our skin any different? It is our largest organ, after all. This has influenced where I shop and what I buy, right down to my cosmetics. And after about a year of intentional testing, here are the products that I love and use everyday for a five minute pretty & mostly natural mom face =)

Physicians Formula Organic Wear Mascara in Black

This stuff is amazing and my all-time favorite mascara. First of all, it’s made with nearly all organic ingredients. There is no junk in this one. This article shows how yucky regular mascaras are – it was definitely an eye-opener for me (see what I did there?! =) ) It gives a nice thickness to my lashes, doesn’t flake off, doesn’t clump, and I know if it gets rubbed into my eyes I’m not ingesting anything harmful.

Neutrogena 3-in-1 Concealer for Eyes

I’ve used this for years, and while not nearly as clean as the mascara, it contains an SPF 20 sunscreen and provides decent coverage without looking cake-y. It’s available at any drugstore, Target, etc. so I don’t have to make a special trip to a cosmetic counter for it. The color is a good match for my skin tone, and one tube lasts forever because it doesn’t take much. I haven’t found a clean alternative concealer – especially one with sunscreen – so I reason that if I don’t use much and am careful not to rub it in my eye, it’s no biggie.

Physicians Formula Talc-Free Mineral Airbrushing Pressed Powder

I love this product! My skin tends to be normal to dry, and acne-prone. One swipe of this powder and I cover all that up without looking like I’m wearing a lot of makeup. My secret: I don’t use the brush they provide – I use a clean, dry makeup sponge instead. This gives me a lot more coverage if I’ve got a bad breakout or particularly dark circles to cover. The brush is perfect for a little mid-day touch up, and I love that the powder contains a mineral base, no talc, and is a little cleaner than your average powder.

Lip Gloss

I am never, ever without lip gloss. Even if I’m not wearing a stitch of other makeup, I still add a little shine to my lips. I feel like it adds a finishing touch and makes me look pulled together, even on yoga pant and spit-up stained t-shirt days =) When I started to move toward more natural cosmetic products, I tossed my whole stash of lip glosses and started over. While it was hard to do, it’s been worth it to know I’m not actually ingesting any harmful chemicals. Here are my current favorite lip glosses:

Burt’s Bees Lip Gloss in Autumn Haze

Burt’s Bees Lip Shine in Wink

Burt’s Bees Tinted Lip Balm in Hibiscus

Aveda Lip Shine in Amaranth

And there you have it! My application process takes less than 5 minutes, and often I do it in the car when my husband is driving =)  First, I apply the undereye concealer, patting it into place instead of rubbing it in. Next is powder, over my face and under my eyes. Then mascara – two coats does the trick nicely. Finally, lip gloss (my favorite part). And I’m (mostly) naturally ready to face my day! Or at least the UPS guy. =)

Check out these other great ideas too – cornstarch and coconut oil.

Love this list!! I have two under two and I’m a stay at home mom…I’m also in school full time, and that’s basically the only time I’m ever seen in public…usually with wet hair and the most minimal makeup (read: none) ever. There are definitely items on here I will be checking out. Thanks!

Thanks for sharing your list! I have been trying to find some more natural makeup for myself and being more careful about what goes on my skin.
I like using the Norwex makeup cloth with just water to takeoff my makeup. It’s easy, quick, and safe for my skin.
