Local Love: Lil Beanstalk

Today we are sharing our LOCAL LOVE for Lil Beanstalk and it’s Founder Lisa Shol!

“I hope to inspire others to think about their own carbon footprint and how they can participate in a more sustainable lifestyle. I’m by no means a sustainabilty expert, but found ways to create change within my own home, while continually learning.”

Lil Beanstalk

Tell us all about you! What you do and where your passions lie?

I am a busy mom of 4 – 2 step children (13 and 9), a 2.5 year old, and a 9 year old fur baby. I work full time as an experiential marketing lead and am passionate about volunteerism (committee member at the Greater Minneapolis Crisis Nursery) and building a more sustainable future for my littles (both personally and professionally). In my free time, I love spending time at the cabin in northwest Minnesota, trying new local restaurants, and enjoying the Minneapolis music scene.

Tell us all about Lil Beanstalk!

In 2019 my first child was born. Motherhood was amazing, but also overwhelming, and as a result I soon fell into the routine of buying everything new for my baby. While on-line shopping saved me time, I felt guilty about my new non-sustainable lifestyle.

Thankfully, I had a friend with a son a couple months older than mine who encouraged me to borrow her son’s clothing – it would save me time, money, and help her declutter. Every couple of months my friend would drop off clean, pre-loved clothing at my door and take back the clothes that my son no longer needed.

Unfortunately this opportunity of sharing came to an end once our son’s started wearing the same size clothing. And while I had come to appreciate the benefits of pre-loved clothing, I once again found myself defaulting to buying new while out running errands or shopping online. In an effort to get back to my sustainable ways, I started scouring online secondhand marketplaces and driving around town picking up clothing from strangers. However, it was always a gamble as to what clothes I was going to receive and in what condition, it was time consuming, and left me with the burden of finding a new home for my son’s outgrown clothing to complete the sustainability cycle. It was then that I realized that there needed to be a more convenient solution for busy families to take advantage of pre-loved baby clothing.

Lil Beanstalk was created to eliminate these challenges and enable families to take advantage of the convenient, cost effective, and sustainable benefits of borrowing pre-loved clothing.

Lil Beanstalk is an easy, stress-free, doorstep delivery subscription of gently worn baby clothes that saves you time, money and space – all while being as flexible as your baby needs.

What do you love about the Twin Cities area? Why is it the perfect place for your business?

So much to love about TC! I love the seasons and how the community embraces all the elements. I love the people and how communities and neighborhoods rally around to show support for and care for their businesses and families. I love how much people value the environment (lakes, farmland, north shore) and will fight to protect it.

What is the best way for our TCMC community to support your business?

Now let’s talk about your role as a mother and friend. How do you prioritize friendships and connections with women?

I’m still learning to do this, especially since I’ve entered the new role of mom! It’s not always easy to find the time, but I always leave my time with my girlfriends feeling refreshed and inspired. It’s this renewed energy that reminds me how much these connections mean to me. And while I’ve been blessed with many life long friends, I’ve also enjoyed meeting new women through starting a this business. There are SO many smart, amazing, bold women in Minneapolis doing outstanding things!!

Being a mom is no easy task in and of itself. How do you relax and take care of you?

Books, baths, movies (in the theater!), yoga, and massages – anything that helps me to slow down my brain for awhile!

What’s been your greatest joy in motherhood?

Watching my son learn – their little brains are fascinating! I hope I can continue to foster an environment of learning and exploration!

How do you hope your lives influence and/or inspire other women?

I hope to inspire others to think about their own carbon footprint and how they can participate in a more sustainable lifestyle. I’m by no means a sustainabilty expert, but found ways to create change within my own home, while continually learning.
