I’ve heard many times that selfies are taken by those who are narcissistic attention seekers. While I guess that could be true, it has become normal for myself and my family, and I love it. Our daughter will ask for us to take a selfie, “So we’re all in the photo, mama,” she says.
In today’s day and age, we are able to take so many photos without having to wait until the roll of film is full to take it in to be developed and hope we got some good shots. We have the instant satisfaction of knowing if the photos are blurry or something we don’t want to keep.
Along with this is the ability to take so many more photos than we ever did before. Personally, I have downloaded thousands upon thousands of photos from my phone, especially since the birth of my daughter.
When we were growing up, it was all too often that my mother wouldn’t be in the photos, she’d almost always be on the other end of the camera, making sure that the memories were captured. While I am grateful that she did that, I am sad that she isn’t in more photos with us.
I want to make sure that I am in our memories and this is why I love the selfie. I am absolutely a Selfie Mom, and I am 100% okay with that.
This applies to adventures my daughter and I embark on while my wife is working, but you better know it also includes family selfies so that one of us is not missing from our family memories. It has become a thing for our family to always capture a selfie when we’re out doing fun things. If someone offers to take a photo of us, we usually turn it down because all of our memories are already captured in this way and we have fun ensuring the attraction we are visiting is included in the photo behind us.
Don’t get me wrong, we get plenty of pictures of the entire trip, but we always want to ensure we have all been captured in what we did along the way. Then I continue snapping away as my daughter plays, getting fun shots of her doing what four-year olds do.
I encourage you to take that selfie – some can turn out rather unflattering, but you’ll figure out how to get the best angles and you’ll have it down in no time. You’ll be laughing as you work on the perfect way to take a family selfie – call it family bonding time.

I enjoyed reading you piece. I often get discouraged when my husband doesn’t think to take many pics of me with the kids as I do of him. Selfies are the way to get this done! I often say “let’s take a selfie” and it’s funny now when I see my 4 year old playing with her toy phone doing the same thing.
