We are MORE than a little excited to be reviving our I Am A Twin Cities Mom series. To get us started again, we are welcoming Joy McAfee!

“Hey y’all! My name is Joy. I am a postpartum doula and owner of Joy the Village Doula LLC. I am passionate about cooking, building community, knowledge sharing and providing sacred support. I am a survivor of postpartum depression. I am the mother of one daughter/future pop star age 5 and one son/future NFL prospect age 11. My husband put a ring on it 12 years ago. I still have a crush on him.”

Where in the Twin Cities do you call home?

I’m a proud St. Paul girl through and through.

If we peeked in your purse right now, what would we find?

Some Valentine’s day candy I swiped from my children, my wallet, a disposable face mask, expired mascara, tic tac, hand sanitizer and some old, stale cracker crumbs.

How do you prioritize friendships and connections with other women?

I’m actually really bad at this for so many reasons. I am blessed with friends who hold me accountable by reminding me we need each other.

Being a mom is no easy task. How do you relax and take care of you?

I’m getting better at being consistent with my self care. I’ve recently started journaling and will soon begin a routine of walking. I especially like soaking in the bathtub, massages and singing 90s/2000s Pop songs in the car by myself..

What’s been your greatest joy in motherhood?

Watching my children discover their passions.

What have you found most challenging in your motherhood journey?

Finding balance between giving them what they think they need and giving myself what I know I need. Also HAIR! Their hair, my hair it’s a THING!!

How do you hope your life influences and/or inspires other women?

I hope my life inspires other women to give themselves permission to be authentic. Let’s embrace that we are perpetually under construction.
