I am a Twin Cities Mom: Erin Statz

Today’s I am a Twin Cities Mom feature is all about Erin Statz

I am a Twin Cities Mom | Erin Statz

“English was my always WORST subject but somehow I ended up a writer. After my 3rd son was born with Down syndrome, it ignited a passion of discovering words that could bring my story of heartache followed by immense joy to life. That passion then cleared a shining path of advocacy for my child’s worth and life, not to mention to show the amazing personality that comes once in a lifetime that was bestowed to him. He is the BEST! With this whirlwind, I am now working my dream job as the Communications Manager at the Down Syndrome Association of Minnesota and also grateful to be part of our awesome Down syndrome community! In my spare time, I live in my car driving my boys ages 11, 10, and 7 around to sports, friends’ house and the pool. I also am a self-acclaimed plant lady and a world class foodie as I grew up in a multicultural household as my dad is from Vietnam.”

What do you love about calling the Twin Cities home?

I was born and raised here. Fact: I only live 2 miles away from my childhood home.

If we peeked in your purse right now, what would we find?

Sunscreen, lip gloss, little first aid kit, wallet with a million Target receipts, Stevia packets, hand wash & hand lotion and snacks, snacks, snacks for my three growing boys

How do you prioritize friendships and connections with other women?

I am always the plan maker so I prioritize friends who also invite me out for mom nights, coffee dates, playdates, etc..

Being a mom is no easy task. How do you relax and take care of you?

Gardening is something I do every year for me. I love it and watching growth makes me feel happy. I also relax in my she shed which I just found a crystal chandelier for at a garage sale. I love 2nd hand shopping and upcycling items!

What’s been your greatest joy in motherhood?

My greatest joy is when people tell me how kind and well behaved my boys are. I guess I did something right!

What have you found most challenging in your motherhood journey?

My journey is different as I am always walking on two motherhood paths: The special needs mom and then the typical mom. Most of the times the paths are the same but sometimes they are not. The part that gets to me on the differing paths are the limits and views preset on my child with Down syndrome. I use my voice and share our story hoping to open eyes and hearts on what this life is really like for us.

How do you hope your life influences and/or inspires other women?

You have a story, tell it!
