How to Host a Gender-Reveal Party

How to Host a Gender-Reveal Party | Twin Cities Moms Blog

We decided to do something different and host a Gender Reveal Party for our fourth (yes, you read that right!) baby.

A Gender Reveal Party is when the parents find out the gender of their unborn baby at the same time as their guests – and the reveal usually takes place as a “surprise” event such as pink or blue filling in a cake, cupcakes, or even a wrapped box of pink or blue helium-filled balloons!

As a busy mom, I knew I did NOT have time to plan an elaborate party, but I knew I did want to do something special, something different, and something fun when finding out our fourth (and last) baby’s gender. So we kept it small, casual, and most importantly, easy! Here’s our plan if you want to do something similar. I highly recommend it!

1. Schedule an Ultrasound and the Party Date. Because the whole gender reveal aspect really can’t get very far without an ultrasound, putting a date on the calendar is the first step. I found it best to schedule the ultrasound the morning of the day of the party. I knew waiting that whole day to find out our news would be difficult enough, so scheduling everything on the same day was crucial! 🙂

2. Find a Baker.  Because I knew I wanted to reveal our baby’s gender with a pink-or-blue-filled cake, I knew I would have to find a baker that could make a custom cake on the same day I ordered it. I called around and found that Byerly’s had their cake decorator in the store that day, so they could make a cake by that afternoon. Yipee! Because I wanted to find out our news at the same time as our guests, I had the ultrasound technician write the baby’s gender in a sealed envelope, which I handed over to the baker (without peeking).

3. Invite Guests. We kept this party super casual so I just sent a text to friends and family to let them know we wanted them to stop over for some cake and to share in this surprise with us. Of course, an evite or even a paper invitation would work great as well!

4. Plan a Theme. You can scope out Pinterest for some ideas on a theme. Most ideas you will find are pink-or-blue. I decided to go with a gold-and-white theme.

5. Execute the Event. Because I was keeping it simple, I had just a small list to shop for:

  • a cake (Byerly’s) filled with PINK or BLUE icing
  • paper plates and napkins
  • fresh flowers (love gladiolas!)
  • drinks (sparking cider and/or champagne is fun)
  • decorations (all DIY by me…cake topper (see instructions below) and gold frame with printed question-mark)

And the CAKE! It was blue! Cheers!

Instructions for Gold Glitter Cake-Topper:

Materials: two bamboo skewers, bakery twine, washi tape

Instructions: Cut bakery twine to desired length – about 3 inches wider than your cake. Tie each end to top of bamboo skewer. Tape folded rectangles of washi tape to string so that the “sticky” parts stick to each-other and the fold is all along the twine. The number of rectangles is totally up to you, but this is usually best with odd numbers, like 5 or 7. Next you simply cut a triangle out of the bottom of each rectangle. And that’s it!
