Holiday Fun for Every Who, Ages 3 to 102!

Everyone’s favorite furry green holiday villain is back: Dr. Seuss’s How The Grinch Stole Christmas! is on stage at Children’s Theatre Company, now through January 6. Last year’s performance was a sell-out, smash hit…and this year’s will be even better!

The miserly, miserable Grinch has had enough of the Whos despicable Christmas joy! He conceives a dastardly plot, but when tiny Cindy-Lou Who extends a hand of friendship, the course of Who-History – and the size of the old green guy’s heart – is changed forever.

Keep the holiday fun going with these Grinch-related activities to do with your family! From Grinchy snacks, to science-experiment snowflakes, to gifts of appreciation, get in the holiday spirit with CTC!

Who-Customs and Holiday Traditions

No one loves Christmas more than the Whos! They have unique family traditions that make the holiday so special, like the songs they sing (“Who Likes Christmas?!”, the gifts they make for each other, and especially, the foods they eat (Who Pudding, Who Hash, and Roast Beast!).

What fun foods might you serve at a Who-feast? Would you serve cookies, or cakes, or pies? How about fruits and vegetables? Create a menu from all the food groups, and write recipe cards for your Who-dishes. Then, check out some of these fun recipes to make with your family!

  1. Grinch Fruit Kabobs – with grapes, strawberries, bananas, and mini marshmallows!
  2. Grinch Heart Cookies – made with cake mix!
  3. Grinch Pretzel Bites – a mix of sweet and savory sure to grow your heart 3 sizes!

Make Your Own Snowflakes

Grinch at CTC | Twin Cities Moms Blog

Falling snow always makes it feel more like Christmas! On Christmas Eve, all the little Whos are tucked into bed, and Mama Who, JP Who, Grandma Who, and Grandpa Who sing a song about how beautiful the silence of falling snow on Christmas Eve is!

Did you know that no two snowflakes are alike? Temperature, humidity, and wind all affect a snowflake’s shape – but they will always be symmetrical. Make your own crystal snowflake! You will need pipe cleaners, string, a jar, water and Borax powder – and a parent to help!

  1. Twist pipe cleaners together to create your unique snowflake shape – don’t forget your symmetry!
  2. Next, tie one end of the string to the tip of your snowflake, and the other end of the string to a pencil.
  3. With an adult’s help, fill a jar with hot water and add Borax powder, 1 tablespoon at a time, stirring to dissolve (approximately 3 tablespoons per cup of water).
  4. Hang the snowflake in the jar so that the pencil rests on top of the jar and your snowflake is fully submerged in the liquid. Leave it in the jar for at least 24 hours, then remove and set aside to dry.
  5. Once dry, hang your snowflake in a window and watch it glisten!

Good Deed Thank-You Notes and Gifts

Grinch at CTC | Twin Cities Moms Blog

Cindy-Lou Who does a good deed by making a Christmas present for The Grinch, and then another by welcoming him into the Whos’ community. Good deeds come in all shapes and sizes, but stem from someone being kind. Think of a time when someone was kind to you. Then, write them a letter to let them know how thankful you are—turn this into a good deed when you present this to your friend!

Or, make a gift to show your appreciation – like a Grinch heart ornament! You will need clear, plastic bulb ornaments, pom-poms in various sizes and shades of green, and a red, oil-based marker.

  1. Take the top off your ornament bulb and fill it with pom-poms until it’s full (great motor skill development for the little ones!).
  2. Then, use the red marker to draw a heart on the ornament – be sure to let it dry fully. Sharpies also work!
  3. Then, put the top back on your ornament, and voila! You have a lovely gift for a friend.
