If I had to pick just one small indulgence, I would always have fresh flowers in our home. Especially in Minnesota when green is a color we see little of and long for throughout half the year, it’s so nice to have something living inside our house. Whether it’s simple greens, a cluster of my favorite blooms or a full bouquet, it’s amazing the difference flowers can make in the feel of a room and the life they can add.
Whenever I can, I grab a few small bouquets and spread them around the house – the physical environment of our home is something I try to be intentional about, but as a mom I don’t have a lot of time to work hard at that, which is why I love to take the easy route by adding flowers. Whether you love to see the beauty in your home, or you need the encouragement of something living in your home throughout our long winters, the presence of flowers really can lower your stress levels and bring relief to otherwise hectic days with kids. In fact, it’s scientifically proven.
A recent UNF research study shows that flowers actually DO have an impact on our stress levels. According to lead researcher Erin Largo-Wight, Ph.D., Associate Professor of University of North Florida’s Department of Public Health, “There is a growing body of research that illustrates how environmental design positively impacts health. Now it is both intuitive and scientifically known that adding elements of nature, like flowers, to interiors promotes well-being.”
As moms, we have to consider self-care one of our survival tools throughout our hectic schedules some days, and I truly consider having flowers inside a little gift to myself on the days when I hear my name 42 times in just one hour. When I clean up yet another mess around the house – at least I can look up and see something pretty is smiling at me from a vase across the room!
