Flu Season Survival Kit

I remember March of last year. Not fondly. Our whole family got a nasty influenza bug and it took us out for weeks. The kids spiked scary high fevers and laid on the couch for days on end. I remember laying in bed and wanting to text my husband (who was on the other side of the house) to have him come help me, but it was too much effort to reach over three feet and pick up my phone! I’m telling you, it was bad.

This year I’m getting our family prepared. I can’t control whether or not we get sick, but I can prepare now to make life easier if we do. I’ve assembled a “Flu Season Survival Kit” with some kid-friendly staples, busy activities for the kids, and a few treats for me too. Now I’ll have a tool kit to help our family cope if it hits again this year.

Here are some of my suggestions to include in your own kit:

  1. A few kid movies that your children haven’t seen before (save money by checking your local thrift store)
  2. A magazine you like that you never get to read
  3. Sticker/activity books for the kids
  4. Chicken noodle soup
  5. A boxed, easy-to-prepare meal
  6. A few shelf-stable kids’ snacks
  7. Juice boxes
  8. Gatorade
  9. Pedialyte
  10. Kleenex – good ones, with aloe

Also, if you can, set up online grocery delivery so you have an option in case your whole family becomes ill and it’s a struggle to get out of the house to get simple staples.

Once you pull your items together, place them in a box in your closet, where they will be easily accessible if you need them. Additionally, put a reminder on your calendar for sometime in April or May (after flu season has passed) when you can take out the box if you haven’t needed it and have a fun, relaxing day enjoying all the goodies!

My hope is that you won’t need to use it, but if you do, it will be a blessing to you and your family.

We saw that we are lucky so far not getting any flu – but…we do have Spring Fever with this incredible weather. Your “Flu Season Survival Kit” is a good one, but we surely hope not to need it this year!
