Five Reasons Toddlers Rock

Five Reasons Toddlers Rock | Twin Cities Moms Blog

Life with toddlers can be nuts.  Lighthearted, but nuts.  The things they say, the strong wills, the full blown tantrums, they are all part of the package.  Everyday you get something new.  My three year old can go from Jekyll to Hyde in minutes, seconds actually.  Highs are high and lows are low with those tiny emotions and some days leave me feeling like I have accomplished nothing other than keeping my children alive (just barely).  But I still chalk this parenting thing up as the most draining yet rewarding duty I will ever have.  And sooner than later, unfortunately, they won’t be spending almost all day under my roof driving me batty.  Full time school will come.  Extra curriculars.  Dating (I just threw up a bit in my mouth).  Friends will become more important to them than spending time at home with family.  And then, college.  I can’t even let my brain go there.  So, for now, I’ve decided to try my best to savor these toddler days and embrace the fact that these kids are pretty darn cool most of the time.  So I give to you, Five Reasons Toddlers straight up Rock.

1.  They Need Me

Yep, I’ll go there.  They need me.  For nearly everything.  Wiping poop and wiping tears.  Showing right and explaining wrong.  Calming down and psyching up.  To eat.  To fall asleep.  To feel safe and secure.  And as suffocating as it can feel at times, I’ll take it.  Because my guess is that in the blink of an eye, I’ll be wishing these needs back.

2.  Their Innocence

There is a sense of innocence in toddlers that is remarkable to me.  The wonder.  The curiosity.  The amazement.  So much is new for them in this world and they embrace the heck out of it.  Things we take for granted, they see so much beauty in.  An airplane flying above.  Nature.  A silly kitchen utensil.  It’s all so amazing to them.  Their perspectives on life have often become my best learned lessons.  They live minute by minute in contentment.  No worrying about where to be or what to do next, they are indulged in the moment.  Please remind me of this the next time my daughter asks me “why” 436 times in a row or when my son is eating dirt.

3.  They Wrestle.  And Forget.

Can you remember the last time you got angry with someone?  How did you handle it?  Did it linger on in your brain for days…months?  I’m completely guilty.  Toddlers wrestle.  And once the wrestling is over, they forget.  Easy peasy.  No venting, no cold shoulder, no hard feelings.  I’ll take this over teenage drama any day of the week.

4.  They’re Hilarious

Absolutely hilarious.  They’re like little drunk people most of the time.  The tripping.  The farting.  The dancing.  The blurting out random thoughts.  Free entertainment, people.

5.  They’re Real

They are as real as it gets.  Pure and raw.  If they don’t like you at the moment, they’ll tell you.  There’s no beating around the bush.  No ulterior motives.  No tough to read passive aggressiveness.  If they are elated, they’re screaming with joy.  If they don’t like what you are wearing you’re going to hear about it.  They will call you out on every single thing under the sun.  And at the end of the day, regardless of any of it, you know they love you more than the moon and the stars.  That you are their entire world.  And it feels simply incredible.

And this is why I even miss them when they’re sleeping. Well written, Melissa, beautifully descript as always! <3
