Do One Thing Every Day That Scares You

Do One Thing Every Day That Scares You | Twin Cities Moms Blog

Or so says the magnet on the side of the file cabinet in my office (that’s filled with snacks and shoes, but that’s neither here nor there). At my core, I’m an adventurer, a change-lover, someone who looks at that magnet and thinks, “Well…of course!”

But let’s be honest – motherhood can be the opposite of that. It can be monotonous. As incredible and ever-changing as these tiny humans can be, they’re also predictable. Creatures of habit and structure and routine. Despite our best efforts, we sometimes have to abort the trip to the park when putting on mittens starts WWIII. We have no choice but to skip that last stop when we’re pushing naptime. We’re hopelessly trapped lying on the nursery floor in the dark, thinking of all the things we’d rather be doing than plotting our silent ninja escape routine (which will never work anyway).

Mommin’ can feel a lot like Groundhog Day, right? An endless cycle of wake-kid-work-kid-bed-repeat – and it can make our souls antsy. Recently I glanced at my prized magnet and realized while I’m doing stuff that’s hard and important and rewarding, often I’m not doing even the smallest scary things.

So I moved the magnet where I can see it and vowed to take it to heart. Intentionally. (Because, duh, opening up a morning diaper after a three-day poop strike is terrifying but isn’t exactly optional.) In small ways.

In an impulsive move that I will likely regret, I signed up for my first triathlon. (My mother’s response was something like, “Great! Do you, um, know how to swim?”)

I joined a running team after years of debating whether I should and which one and how it will work with my schedule and whether I’ll embarrass myself.

I registered for a five-week interactive, online style class (and took my first selfies omg).

I sucked up my squirminess, despite working in government for close to a decade, and told my elected officials about things that matter to me.

They’re little things, but they disrupted my normal routine enough to remind me why I put the magnet up in the first place – to light the spark.

Feed your soul, mamas, and your sense of adventure. Choose to do one thing today that scares you, even if it’s just in a little way.
