DIY Silk Flower Headbands

flowerpic1

I have a confession. I’m totally one of those moms who LOVES all things pink and frilly for my baby girls. Shortly after they were born I learned about the amazing world of fancy schmancy headbands. I mean seriously. A huge oversized bow on a tiny baby? It really doesn’t get much cuter.

Unfortunately, I also learned that the amount of them I wanted to buy simply wasn’t going to fit within our budget. So, I set out to make my own and figured out how to do it for a fraction of the price.

Over the past 11 months I’ve experimented with various methods, some more time consuming than others. This one, however, is by far the easiest and fastest, taking only five minutes from start to finish.

So here’s to cheap, easy, and CUTE! And if you don’t have girls, don’t count yourself out. They make perfect baby and birthday gifts!

-Hot glue gun & glue

-Scissors

Instructions

1. Remove the stem and all other plastic insides of the flower.

2. Pin the petals together through the center.

3. Using a needle and thread (or a sewing machine), put a few stitches through the center to fasten the petals together. Be careful not to make more than two or three stitches so the area is small enough to be covered by the jewel. Remove the pin. Hot glue the jewel of your choosing over the stitches.

4. Measure the elastic for the size of the child you’re making it for. Leave a bit extra on the end (approx. 1/4″) so you can overlap the elastic when it’s glued. The recommended lengths are as follows (including the extra at the end):

  • Newborn: 13 3/4″
  • 3 – 6 months: 15″
  • 6 – 12 months: 16 1/4″
  • 12 months – Tween: 17 1/4″
  • Adult: 18 1/4″

Overlap the ends of the elastic and hot glue them together.

5. Glue the elastic to the back of the flower.

6. Trace and cut out a small felt circle. For this 4 inch flower, I used the size of a thread spool.

7. Glue the felt circle on top of the elastic, to create a comfortable padding against the head.

That’s it! You’re all done!

Now the only thing left to do is try it out on your little model(s)!
