DIY Handprint Ornament

Listen, I’m not one of those moms who has an elaborate activity or craft planned out for my kids every day. As a matter of fact, the closest I usually ever get to completing a “kid-friendly” craft that takes any type of pre-planning is pinning it to my “Toddler Activities” board on Pinterest. Luckily, this project didn’t take any prep time and was so easy, even I got ‘er done. So, whether you’re craft-challenged like me or a full-blown Martha Stewart, these DIY Handprint Ornaments are great for moms of all skill-levels. Not only do they take very little time or effort, but they also make great keepsakes or gifts for family members during the Holiday season.

They only take 3 simple ingredients to make:

1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
1/2 cup water

First, mix these 3 ingredients together in a bowl, and then knead the dough for 5-10 minutes until it is soft and smooth.

Second, roll out the dough onto a floured surface to your desired thickness. I left mine about a quarter inch thick. Then, say a little prayer before attempting to get your child to imprint their hand into the dough without grabbing a chunk or flailing their hands uncontrollably in an escape effort. Just kidding. But seriously, if your child is anything like mine, this just might be the most challenging part of the project.

Third, you will need to stamp the circle ornaments from the dough. I used a candle that was about 4 inches in diameter, and I was able to easily get 4 ornaments out of this batch of dough. I then used a straw to stamp out the holes to hang the ornaments.

Lastly, bake the ornaments in the oven at 150 degrees for two hours. Or, you can let them air dry for a couple of days instead of baking.

And the result? An adorable ornament that captures the sweet memory of those irresistible, chubby little hands that you can cherish for years to come!

Great craft! We make these with air dry clay from Crayola. I flatten it out on a a cutting board 🙂 We also pre-cut the dough in a circle then do the press…..Can’t wait to see more!
