Meet 5 Twin Cities Businesses Awarded Comcast RISE Grants in July

It’s no secret that small businesses have been dealing with a number of challenges over the past couple of years – from the ongoing impact of the pandemic, social unrest, and environmental events.

Businesses owned by people of color and women

And small businesses owned by people of color and/or women have been some of the hardest hit. According to the National Bureau of Economic Research, between February and April 2020, the number of active Black-owned businesses declined by 41%, Latinx-owned businesses declined by 32%, and Asian-owned businesses dropped by 25%, versus just 21% for the general population.

While there is a decline in businesses owned by people of color – women-owned businesses are growing at only half the rate of those run by men. This is largely because women struggle to access capital and other resources to help them succeed.

Comcast RISE: Representation, Investment, Strength, Empowerment

Last September, Comcast was accepting applications for grants. Comcast RISE was created to invest in the success of these critical businesses by providing valuable and practical support. Comcast RISE- which stands for: Representation, Investment, Strength, and Empowerment – is part of Comcast’s ongoing efforts to advance digital equity and help to provide underrepresented small business owners with access to the digital tools and funding they need to thrive.

100 small businesses who will be awarded a $10,000 grant

In July 2022, Comcast announced the 100 small businesses owned by women and people of color, including Black, Indigenous, Hispanic, and Asian American owners, among others, will be awarded the $10,000 grants totaling $1 million, through the Comcast RISE program. Since the program’s inception – $2 million in grants have been awarded to Twin Cities small businesses.

Hijab Shack was created 10 years ago after the founder became a mom and had trouble finding modest clothing and hijabs that fit the lifestyle of a young girl. When her own hijabs looked too big and odd on her daughter, she decided to take matters into her own hands and got behind a sewing machine.

She started sewing scarves and hijabi outfits. When others in the community took notice and asked where they could get similar pieces for their girls – she founded Mokka Fashions, where hijabs and modest clothing for all ages were sold.

They have now grown from selling pieces locally and out of a basement – to having a storefront and a strong online presence – shipping nationwide!
