What I Learned About Beauty, I Learned From My Mom

I grew up thinking my mother was the most beautiful woman in the world.

Years later, I know she is.

There’s so much more that makes my mother beautiful than just the surface level. She’s generous, thoughtful, and kind. She makes a mean peach tart. And she’s full of wisdom.

That being said, she’s also beautiful on the outside. She has always taken great care of herself, and takes pride in doing what she can to care for her skin.

To this day, I cannot stand wearing nail polish on my fingers, and it’s all thanks to my mom. She had a disdain for chipped polish, and it’s carried over to me. I’d rather go without any color at all than to see a little crack in the veneer. One small chip, and I’m picking it all off!

One piece of my mom’s advice that I wish I could live out? To get plenty of rest. Instead, I head to bed in the wee hours, then lie awake willing myself to fall asleep. Thank goodness for good under eye concealer, or these dark circles under my eyes would be a sight to behold! And every morning I swear that I will heed her words of wisdom and go to bed early (only to fail again at following through that night).

Long before beauty magazines were telling us to wash our faces each night and cleanse ourselves of layers of makeup, my mom was preaching this philosophy. Every time I just want to crash and fall into bed (because, once again, I’ve stayed up far too late), I hear my mother’s voice in my head, “Cate – don’t forget to wash your face!” And I force myself over to the sink and choose to obey. Aside from the wonders it’s doing for my skin, the secondary benefit is that I never have to worry about finding mascara and bronzer smeared all over my pillow in the morning!

I remember Ponds being a part of my mom’s beauty routine, and the amazing thing is that this company is still around and is only getting better. I was shocked, when picking up some Ponds items at Target, at how little I spent on them! Have I been spending a ton of money on fancy beauty products all these years for no reason?

The anti-wrinkle cream promises to reduce fine lines in just two weeks AND it smells great with just a hint of a fresh scent. My skin tends to be dry and even itchy, and it soothed my fragile epidermis from the first night of use.

I was super excited to discover the makeup wipes. These cleansing towelettes wiped off my day of makeup in no time flat. And they’re going to come in really handy on my upcoming trip to Africa, when running water won’t always be easily accessible. I’ll still be able to follow my mom’s advice while I’m on the go. It’s a win/win.
