Beat the Winter Itch: Fight Dry Skin with Vanicream | Twin Cities Moms Blog

As Minnesotans, we know dry skin. We know rough, parched hands and tight, itchy post-shower skin. We know scaly, dry patches that appear on the backs of our kids’ arms. We know the horror of brushing our face with a black wool glove and discovering a patch of crumbs around our mouth. We keep touching, wiping, rubbing them off thinking the crumbs will eventually wipe clean until… those aren’t breadcrumbs. Those little flakes are the skin on your face. Coming off. One by one. On your glove. Gross.

(Please tell me that’s happened to you. Please? Um, okay. Moving on.)

Given our familiarity with dry, rough skin, it was a no brainer when Vanicream offered our family the opportunity to try their line of dermatologist-recommended, chemical irritant and fragrance-free moisturizers and bar soap. After all, winter and its wonderfully dry air is most definitely here.

Because I’m selfish, I decided to try it first. (Okay, fine. My son was already dressed and I was just too tired to deal.) After cleansing my face, I rubbed a small amount of Vanicream Lite over my skin. It was glorious. It was silky, smooth, absorbed quickly into my skin and worked beautifully under makeup. After just a few days of regular use, my skin had a light radiance I hadn’t seen since July. And about two weeks into my Vanicream Lite experiment, a mom at my son’s preschool actually said, “Your skin looks so moisturized! It makes me feel like I need to go home and put on some lotion right now.” I’ll take that as an unbiased endorsement.

While Vanicream Lite would be a great body moisturizer as well, we decided to try Vanicream Moisturizing Skin Cream on our 4-year old’s post-bath skin. He loved pumping the luxuriously thick cream onto his palm and rubbing the silky globs onto his tummy, legs and arms. The result? Baby soft skin that we couldn’t stop kissing! We’ve since used the cream after every one of his baths and Vanicream Lite on nights we skip the tub.

It’s worth noting that while none of us suffer from eczema, a good friend reported that Vanicream worked like a dream on her baby’s itchy, red eczema. Not only is it effective on skin conditions like eczema, Vanicream is also fragrance, sulfate, phosphate and chemical irritant free, so it’s ideal for regular use even on an infant’s sensitive skin.

We also tried out Vanicream’s Cleansing Bar, a mild soap and fragrance-free cleanser. Without question, the bar reduced the tight, itchy skin that typically comes right after drying off from the shower. It lathered beautifully and left our skin feeling clean, fresh and soft. We also felt great using this soap on our son as like Vanicream’s moisturizers, it’s free of any icky chemicals and synthetic fragrances.

But I’m being completely honest, this wasn’t my first experience with Vanicream. One of my biggest insecurities is my under eye area. I’ve spent more money than I care to know on countless creams and serums touting various miracle cures for bags and fine lines. Nothing lived up to its claims. So when I asked my new dermatologist for her recommendation on an eye cream that actually worked, I was floored to hear her response: Vanicream. Because most issues around the eyes are the result (or are exacerbated by) dryness, Vanicream’s gentle moisture is the perfect antidote. Just a gentle pat of product around the orbital area each night has been enough to revitalize my eyes…and my wallet!

Long story short, we’re Vanicream converts. And as long as we’re residents of this dry, wintry tundra, you better believe we’ll have each of these products stocked in our cabinet.
