DIY Your Front Steps with Help From Bachman’s Potting Bench

Disclosure: We’ve partnered with Bachman’s for this sponsored post and couldn’t be more excited to share this easy DIY project they have that sets you up for success!

We recently moved into a new home. In fact, it’s the first home we’ve owned since having kids, and I am more than excited to make it our own. I love that we’re in just before the holidays and can make it cheerful, even if the walls are bare for a while as we figure out where everything goes and what belongs where. I’ve also never truly had a clue as to how to decorate outdoors. I love seeing how others dress their homes, and when I was a nanny, I was always in awe of the pots the mom I worked for created with spruce tops. They were gorgeous, but I’m no gardner, so I was pretty sure that idea was out for me unless I purchased one already put together.

So, when I learned about the Bachman’s Potting Bench, I was pretty skeptical about my skills. After all, I know truly nothing at all about how to go about his, and while I can be creative, I’m not good with plants. At all.

And then I met Ann Marie. She walked me through everything, from how to start, what layers to create, and how to make it your own. A couple of my favorite suggestions for beginners like me are to first, consider this option:

This is a simple spruce top planter that you can either plop on your front porch as is, put into an existing container you already have, or embellish with your own touches. I love that there was this choice because I was initially incredibly overwhelmed at the idea of starting from scratch. Even that seemed a bit overwhelming, but she walked me through a few ideas of what would look best depending on the look you’re going for. They even have a great video looping that shows you visually just how simple and fast it is to pull this together (which you can view at the bottom of this post!).

This is the next best thing and if you want to really feel like you’ve made this project yourself, they have pre-made bundles that you can grab for yourself and again, either leave as is or embellish. Major win! I loved this one because I recently fell in love with magnolia leaves and loved how the color would carry through all of the holidays, while not skipping over Thanksgiving, which is one of my favorite holidays.

What was so great was that after walking me through it all, she had me convinced that I could actually do this myself! I’d learned that juniper was for the bottom and spruce where for height in the middle, and that if I really wanted to throw some gold in there I absolutely could. I grabbed one of the pre-made bundles so I could be sure that one project would turn out beautiful, and then went a little crazy grabbing a handful of other colors and textures to make another of my own completely from scratch.

Overall, I’m pretty proud of my DIY project in the front – I think I’ll try again next year and have learned this year what my outdoor “style” is by then – as it turns out I like height a lot and color more than I expected.

I honestly would never have thought I was capable of putting something like this together all on my own, but of course, I wasn’t on my own because I had a lot of coaching! What I love most about this is that the hours are accessible and you can go at a moment’s notice, so if you’re unable to get to one of the spruce top classes offered by Bachman’s, this is another great way to get a bit of expert help as you decorate for the holidays.
