Annual Girls Trip Away

A few years ago, three girlfriends and I met for our first girls trip since some of us got married and had kids. We went to meet my friend’s son for the first time and then took her on her first solo trip away from him to see the Britney Spears show in Vegas. That weekend we laughed and cried as we reminisced about how we became friends (and all the shenanigans we’ve been in through the years).

A tradition was born that weekend. With friends living in different states, why not make this an annual girls trip? We’d decide on a place and meet for a few days to enjoy each other’s company and take a break from our daily lives.

My husband and I have an arrangement when it comes to our travel plans each year. We try to do a big family trip, a couples trip and a solo trip each with friends. This tradition started a few years ago and we try to plan out far in advance so we can save up and budget for our trips. It’s been the best decision we have made and having the ability to travel together and apart have continued to build our relationship and our bond is even stronger as a couple.

Our annual girls trip is something each of us looks forward to as soon as we confirm a date and place. It’s not always planned to a tee, most of the time it centers around what we want to eat. Yes, the most important part of our annual trip is the food we eat. I am so lucky to have these friends who enjoy food the way I do and we are always excited to enjoy new places together.

We’re making memories for many more years to come. Planning a girls trip isn’t always the easiest. Over the past few years, we’ve learned a few things and I feel like each year it’s become better and better. We have somewhat an itinerary where we know what we want to do in the city and then we plan around it. We don’t plan the trip down to the minute and leave time and flexibility in case things change (i.e.: weather) or we decide we want to do something else.

We are so lucky to have the ability to travel and make time for each other’s friendships. My girlfriends are there for me when I need them the most and I’m so happy we are able to do a girls trip each year. This by far is one of my favorite traditions we’ve started and we will continue to do this for many years to come. There is something about a short getaway with good company that really helps me reset and I come home in a better frame of mind. Of course, we miss our kids and husbands and we make sure we check in with them on a daily basis through FaceTime.

So if you have some close girlfriends you miss because they live farther away or you have a group of friends that you’ve always talked about doing a trip but have never actually done it, I really encourage you to look into it. There’s a girls trip for every budget. If the girls you plan with are all in Minnesota, you could think about a trip up to a northern retreat. If your friends live on each coast, find a spot in the middle or take turns going out closer to one friend. Give each other plenty of time to discuss with the family and save up for airfare, lodging, and any other things you plan to do on your trip.

I have never regretted planning a girls trip and it truly is good for the body and soul. So ladies, where to next?
